थंडीचे दिवस संपले की, ऋतुराज वसंताचे आगमन होते. फाल्गुनातील होळी रंगांची उधळण करून जाते न जाते, तोच वसंत ऋतूची चाहूल लागते. शिशिराच्या थंडीने गारठून गेलेली सृष्टी नव्या उमेदीने पुन्हा एकदा जादूगार वसंताचा रंगबहार शेला अंगावर पांघरायला तयार होते. फेबुवारी, मार्च आणि एप्रिल या महिन्यांमध्ये वसंत ऋतूचे मनमोहक सौंदर्य सर्वत्र पसरते. आपल्या भारतीय वर्षाची सुरूवात आणि शेवट म्हणजे हा वसंत ऋतू होय. वसंत ऋतूच्या चाऊलीनंतर हळूहळू हिवाळा कमी होतो. सर्वत्र हवामान अल्हाददायक बनत जाते. या ऋतूमध्ये सृष्टी हिरवेगार पांघरूण पांघरायला सुरुवात करते. आंब्यांना मोहर फुटतो, सर्वत्र मोहरीच्या फुलांच्या पिवळ्या रंगांची उधळण होते. हाच एक असा ऋतू आहे ज्यामध्ये तापमान अल्हाददायक, आनंददायक असते.
ऋतुराजाच्या आगमनाने अवघ्या सृष्टीचा कायापालट होतो. धरती आणि आकाशही नवनव्या रंगांची उधळण करतात. आंब्यांच्या झाडांवर फुललेल्या मोहराचा सुगंध हळूच कुजबुजतो. 'शिशिर संपला, उठा आणि वसंताचे स्वागत करा.' काजू, शेवगा यांवर फुललेली नाजूक फुले फळांच्या आगमनाची सुवार्ता देतात. शिरिषाची झाडे जांभळट गुलाबी व नाजूक फुलांनी नटतात. जाई, जुई, सायली, मोगरा, चाफा ही सारी सुगंधी मंडळी ऋतुराज वसंताला सोनेरी सायंकाळी सुगंधाची उटी लावतात.
पाहता पाहता सारा परिसर बदलतो. कुणा जादूगाराने जादूची कांडी फिरवली की काय, असे भासते. या किमयेने कविमनाला देखील भुरळ घातलेली असते. 'आला हा वसंत फेरीवाला' म्हणून कुणी कवी ऋतुराजाचे गुणगान करतो, तर कुणाला हा पाहुणा प्रत्यक्ष 'अनंगदेवाचा प्रेषित'च भासतो. वसंताच्या आगमनाने हर्षित झालेला निसर्ग जणू रंग, रूप, गंध यांची आरास मांडतो. निसर्गाच्या अंगप्रत्यंगांतून, वृक्षलतांच्या पानाफुलांतून, नदयानाल्यांच्या संथ नादमय पदन्यासातून, पाखरांच्या मधुर कूजनातून हे चैतन्य दिसायला लागते. आनंद, उत्कटता, काव्य, संगीत आणि सौंदर्य यांचा एक अभूतपूर्व संगम वसंत ऋतूत पाहायला मिळतो.
वसंत ऋतूमध्येच आपल्या देशामध्ये शिवरात्री, वसंत पंचमी आणि होळी हे सण मोठया उत्साहाने साजरे केले जातात. आपल्या भारतीय संस्कृतीमध्ये संगीत साहित्य आणि विविध कलांमध्ये वसंताला अतिशय महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान आहे. संगीताच्या दुनियेतील अनेक रागांपैकी एका रागाचे नावे वसंत असे ठेवण्यात आलेले आहे. या रागावर अनेक चित्रकरांनी विविध रंगीबेरंगी चित्रे सुध्दा रेखाटलेली आहेत. पुरातन काळातील विविध पौराणिक कथांनुसार कामेदवाचा सुपूत्र म्हणजे वसंत असे संबोधले जाते. अनेक कवींनी रूप आणि सौंदर्याची देवता कामदेव याच्या मुलाची आणि मुलीची आनंदवार्ता ऐकून निसर्गदेवता जागृत झाली. सर्व सजीवसृष्टीमधील झाडे त्यासाठी नवीन पल्लवाचे पाळण लावतात. त्यांना रंगीबेरंगी वारा घालतात आणि कोकीळ गोड गाणे गाते. असे वर्णन केले आहे.
वसंत हा ऋतूंचा राजा खरा, पण काही काळ तो आपला 'राजेपणा' विसरून जातो आणि आपल्या चैतन्यमय खेळात निसर्गदेवतेला सामील करून घेतो. या ऋतूचे वैभव हे अनन्यसाधारण आहे. सर्व ऋतूमध्ये वसंत ऋतूला सर्वात महत्त्वाचे स्थान आहे. आपल्या देशाला लाभलेली देणगी म्हणजेच नैसर्गिक सौंदर्य आहे. या ऋतूमध्ये सुरूवातीस तापमान सामान्य असल्याने धरतीवर वास्तव्य करणारी माणसे स्वतःला खूप धन्य समजतात. कारण या सर्व गोष्टीमुळे जीवनामध्ये थोडा का होईना आराम मिळतो. याच काळात फुलांच्या कळ्या अतिशय जोमाने फुलतात आणि तितक्याच उत्साहाने निसर्गाचे स्वागत करतात. याच हंगामामध्ये सर्व शेते पिकांनी बहरून जातात. सर्व तलावांमधून वेगवेगळी कमळाची फुले उमलतात आणि आपल्या मनातील भाव भावना व्यक्त करतात. त्याच वेळी स्वतःच्या मनातील वेदना, दुःख झाकून ठेवतात. हा लोभसवाणा सोहळा पाहायला सूर्य आकाशात संध्याकाळी उशिरापर्यंत रेंगाळू लागतो. कोकिळेच्या सुरात सूर मिसळून बुलबुलसारखे इतर पक्षिगण या आनंदसोहळ्यात सामील होतात.
सरस्वती देवी हि विद्येची देवी मानली जाते. तिचा जन्म वसंत पंचमीच्या दिवशी झाला अशी अख्यायिका आहे. त्यामुळे याच दिवशी सर्वजण मनोभावे सरस्वती देवीचे पुजन करतात.
साऱ्या सृष्टीला वैभवाचे अपूर्व लेणे बहाल करणाऱ्या, चराचरातून चैतन्य फुलवणाऱ्या, रस, रूप, रंग, गंध, स्पर्श यांद्वारा धरेवर स्वर्ग निर्माण करणाऱ्या या ऋतुश्रेष्ठाला 'ऋतुराज' हे नामाभिधान किती सार्थ आहे! निसर्ग त्याच्या भावना व्यक्त करत नसला तरी आपले अनेक भाव तो प्रकट करून दाखवत असतो. म्हणूनच निसर्गाच्या प्रत्येक सौंदर्याचा मनमुराद आनंद आपण घेतला पाहिजे.
