ग्रीष्म ऋतुतील ती संध्याकाळ होती. सूर्यदेव अस्ताला गेले होते. तरीसुध्दा त्यांच्या कठोर कामगिरीची चुणूक अजून जाणवत होती. एक सभा गेले दोन तास रंगली होती. लतादीदी रंगमंचावर उपस्थित होत्या. काहीवळानंतर सभेचा शेवट होत आला तेव्हा सर्वांनी दीदींना गाणे म्हणण्याचा आग्रह केला. लोकग्रहाखातर दीदींनी सूर लावला, कोणतेही वाद्य साथीला नसताना 'मोगरा फुलला' हा अभंग लता दीदी गाऊ लागल्या नि वातावरणातील दाहकता लुप्त झाली. सर्व आजूबाजूचे वातावरण मनाला प्रसन्न, समाधानी करेल असे निर्माण झाले आणि याच वातावरणात सभा संपली. असे उत्कृष्ट सामर्थ्य असलेल्या गायन क्षेत्रातील प्रतिभावंत कलावती, भारतरत्न, गानकोकीळा लता मंगेशकर आज साऱ्या विश्वात विख्यात आहेत. त्याच लतादीदी माझ्या आवडत्या कलावंत आहेत.
आपल्या भारत देशाच्च सरकारने लतादीदींना 'भारतरत्न' हा पुरस्कार दिला, तेव्हा मनात आले की या उपाधीने त्यांचा गौरव झाला की त्यांच्यामुळे प्रत्यक्ष या उपाधीची झळाळी वाढली. लता मंगेशकर यांना आजवर अनेक राज्यस्तरावर, राष्ट्रीय स्तरावर आणि आंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तरांवर 'स्वरभारती', 'कलाप्रवीण', 'सूरश्री', 'स्वरलता' व 'डि. लिट्.' असे अनेक बहुमान प्राप्त झाले आहेत. पण या यशामागे पर्वतासारखे परिश्रम सुद्धा आहेत. यशाचा मार्ग हा काट्याकुट्यातून जातो. अनेक कसोट्यातून उतरल्यावरच सुवर्णाचे तेज झळाळते. आज सर्व दिक्कालाच्या मर्यादा ओलांडून लतादीदी भारतवर्षातील कोट्यावधी लोकांच्या मनावर अधिराज्य करत आहेत. संगीताच्या विश्वात त्यांचे स्थान अढळ, सर्वोत्कृष्ट व सर्वमान्य आहे.
दीदींच्या गळ्यात ' गंधार' आहे. याची कल्पना त्यांच्या बाबांना - दीनानाथांना होती. ते दीदीना सांगत, " लता, तुझ्यावर ईश्वराने कृपा केली आहे, गळ्यातला गंधार सांभाळ." दीदींनी सुद्धा आपल्या पित्याचे वचन आयुष्यभर सांभाळले. आज त्यांच्या प्रत्येक मधूर स्वराने आम्हा रसिकांचे जीवनही तृप्त केली आहे. अनेक ख्यातनाम संगीतकारांची १८०० च्या वर चित्रपटातील विविध रंगढंगांची सुमारे २२ भाषातील गाणी लतादिदींनी गायली असून त्यांची संख्या सुमारे २५ ते ३० हजाराच्या घरात सहज जाते.
लतादीदींच्या स्वर्गीय आवाजाने असंख्य गाणी चिरंजीव झाली आहेत. महाराष्ट्रातील प्रत्येक मराठी व्यक्तीच्या जीवनाच्या प्रत्येक टप्प्यावर दीदींच्या आवाजातील ओळी आपल्याला साथ देत असतात.' आनंदघन' या नावाने त्यांनी संगीत दिग्दर्शनही केले आहे. त्यांनी आपल्या स्वमधूर आवाजात ध्वनीमुद्रीत केलेले 'ए मेरे वतन के लोगो' हे गीत आजही भारतीयांचे डोळे ओले करतात.
अगदी लहान वयातच त्यांना आपल्या वडिलांसोबत एका नाटकात नारदाची भूमिका केली होती. 'सौभद्र', 'भावबंधन', अशा नाटकांतूनही त्यांनी कामे केली. 'गजाभाऊ' तसेच 'पहिली मंगळागौर' अशा काही मराठी गाजलेल्या चित्रपटांतूनही छोट्या भूमिका त्यांनी केल्या आहेत. कारण साऱ्या कुटुंबाची जबाबदारी त्यांच्यावरच होती.
लता दीदींच्या स्वमधूर सुरेल, मुलायम व परिपूर्ण अशा स्वरांनी विश्वातील लक्षावधी श्रोत्यांना सुरांची माधुर्य व सौंदर्य प्रत्ययास आणून दिले. त्यांच्या आवाजाच्या उंच खोलीमध्ये, लवचिकतेमुळे, अलौकिक फिरतीमुळे चित्रपट संगीतकारांना नवनवीन प्रयोग करणे शक्य झाले. 'अवघ्या तीन मिनिटांच्या तबकडीतून लोकांच्या मनापर्यंत संगीत पोचवण्याचे अवघड काम लताने केले,' असा त्यांचा गौरव प्रत्यक्ष कुमार गंधर्वांनी केला आहे.
आपल्या भावंडांसाठी, आपल्या कुटुंबासाठी लतादीदींनी जे अतोनात श्रम केले, त्याची आठवण आजही त्यांना, त्यांच्या भावंडांना व्यतीत करते. अति उच्च पदावर पोहोचूनही या थोर कलावंताने विनम्रपणा सोडला नाही. आपली सामाजिक जबाबदारी हि ती विसरली नाही. पुण्याचे ' दिनानाथ मंगेशकर रुग्णालय' हे त्याचेच द्योतक आहे. आपल्या एवढ्या मोठ्या यशस्वी आणि सफल जीवनातही शास्त्रीय संगीताला आणि आपल्या इतर छंदांना आपण पुरेसा वेळ देऊ शकलो नाही, ही खंत दीदींना आहे. अशीही गानकोकिळा भारत वर्षाचे अक्षय वैभव आहे.
