आपला भारत हा देश पूर्वी स्वयंपूर्ण देश होता. भारताला 'सोने की चिडियाँ' असे संबोधले जात असे. देश पूर्वी अन्नधान्याच्या बाबतीत सुध्दा स्वयंपूर्ण होता. देशात अन्नधान्याचे भरपूर प्रमाणात उत्पादन होत असे. प्रत्येक गावामध्ये घराघरातून सोन्याचा धूर निघत असे म्हटले जात असे. भारत सर्वच बाबतीत स्वयंपूर्ण होता. त्याचे मुळ कारण म्हणजे त्यावेळी देशाची लोकसंख्या कमी होती. देशात जमीनक्षेत्र मोठ्या प्रमाणात उपलब्ध होते. उत्पादन जास्त आणि खाणारी तोंडे कमी असे समीकरण होते.
परंतू लोकसंख्यावाढीचा गहन प्रश्न ही आजच्या भारत देशाची एक जटिल व प्रमुख समस्या निर्माण झाली आहे. आता लोकसंख्या अफाट वाढली आहे. संपूर्ण जगामध्ये आपल्या देशाचा लोकसंख्येत दुसरा क्रमांक लागतो. विसाव्या शतकात मानवाने विज्ञानाच्या साहाय्याने अनेक रोगांवर मात केल्याने माणसाचे आयुर्मर्यादा वाढली आहे. जमीन क्षेत्र कमी झाले आणि खाणारी तोंडे जास्त व उत्पादन कमी होऊ लागले आहे.
लोकसंख्या अशीच वाढत गेली तर देशात मोठया प्रमाणावर बेकारी निर्माण होऊन प्रत्येक माणसाला स्वतःच्या उपजीविकेकरीता स्वार्थी बनाने लागेल. आज एवढया प्रमाणावर लोकसंख्या वाढली आहे की प्रत्येक क्षेत्रामध्ये तडजोड करावी लागत आहे. विविध कार्यालयामध्ये नोकरी मिळवण्याकरीता, विविध शिक्षण क्षेत्रामध्ये प्रवेश मिळवण्याकरता रांगाच रांगा लागत आहेत. आपल्या भारतामध्ये 'ढीगभर गरीब आणि मूठभर श्रीमंत' असे व्यस्त प्रमाण वाढत चालले आहे.
भारत देशाचा जन्मदर जास्त असल्याने लोकसंख्या बेसुमार वाढली आहे. मृत्यूदर कमी होत चालल्याने भारतात लोकसंख्येचा भस्मासूर निर्माण झाला आहे. हा लोकसंख्येचा भस्मासूर असाच वाढत गेला तर याचा वाईट परिणाम भारताच्या अर्थव्यवस्थेवर होईल. त्यामुळे संपूर्ण अर्थव्यवस्था खिळखिळी होईल. अन्न, वस्त्र, निवारा या माणसाच्या मुख्य गरजा सुध्दा भागणार नाहीत. त्याचे कारण म्हणजे आज लोकसंख्या अफाट वाढली आहे. कित्येक लोक आज उपासमारीने मरत आहेत. भारत मुळातच अविकसित देश आहे, त्याहून तो अधिकच अविकसित होत जाईल. त्यामुळे हा वाढलेला लोकसंख्येचा भस्मासूर थांबवला पाहिजे. आपल्या देशामध्ये सुध्दा चीनप्रमाणे कायदे करणे गरजेचे आहे.
लोकसंख्येचा वाढता भस्मासूर थांबविण्यासाठी आज सरकार, विविध सामाजिक संस्था वेगवेगळे कार्यक्रम राबवत आहेत. कारण सर्वांनाच माहीत आहे की लोकसंख्येच्या वाढीचे परिणाम देशावर होणार आहे. यासाठी शासन विविध प्रकारचे कार्यक्रम राबवत आहे. जसे - "हम दो, हमारे दो." परंतू आता सध्या आपल्या देशात दुरदर्शनवर "हम दो हमारा एक" अशा जाहिराती येऊ लागल्या आहेत. अशा प्रकारच्या जाहिराती का येतात? यामागचे मुख्य कारण म्हणजे देशाची लोकसंख्या वाढ थांबली पाहिजे. आपल्या देशाने लोकशाही शासन पध्दतीचा स्विकार केल्याने चीनप्रमाणे कठोर कायदे करता येत नाहीत. असा कायदा केला तरी शासनदरबारी त्याला लोकशाहीत विरोध होईल याकरीता अशा प्रकारचे विविध कार्यक्रम राबवले जातात.
आजची मुख्य गरज म्हणजे लोकसंख्या वाढू न देणे ही आहे. ही समस्या फक्त भारताचीच नाही तर संपूर्ण जगाची आहे. लोकसंख्येचा हा विस्फोट थांबवण्याचे प्रयत्न सर्वत्र चालू आहेत. या लोकसंख्येबरोबरच सर्वत्र हवा, पाणी आणि अन्नधान्याचे सुध्दा प्रदूषण वाढले आहे. अशा अनेक प्रकारच्या समस्या थांबवायच्या असतील तर सर्वप्रथम लोकसंख्येला आटोक्यात आणणे गरजेचे आहे. म्हणून शासनाच्यावतीने, विविध सामाजिक संस्थांच्या माध्यमातून विविध कार्यक्रम हाती घेतले जात आहेत.
आज आपल्या देशात अन्नधान्य समस्या, नोकरीच्या समस्या, राहण्याच्या जागांच्या समस्या निर्माण झाल्या आहेत, त्यासोबतच यापुढे पाणी समस्याही मोठया प्रमाणात निर्माण झाली आहे. राहण्याच्या जागांची समस्या सोडवण्याकरीता मोठ्या प्रमाणात वृक्षतोड झाली आहे. त्यामुळे वनराई नष्ट होत चालली आहे. आपल्या देशाच्या अनेक भागांमध्ये चारशे, पाचशे फूट खोल कूपनलिका मारूनही पाणी लागत नाही. निसर्गातील विविध खनिजांचे साठे संपुष्टात येऊ लागले आहेत. या सर्व समस्यांवर उपाय म्हणजे लोकसंख्येला आळा घालणे. याबाबतचे प्रयत्न हे युध्दपातळीवर होणे गरजेचे आहे. तरच आपला देश वाचणार आहे. अन्यथा विनाश अटळ आहे हे प्रत्येकाने लक्षात ठेवले पाहिजे. अन्यथा हा लोकसंख्येचा भस्मासूर किंवा विस्फोट आपल्या सर्वांना भस्मिभूत केल्याशिवाय राहणार नाही.
