माझ्या आवडत्या कामातील एक काम आहे, भाजी बाजारातील फेरफटका. माझ्या काही मित्रांना माझ्या या आवडीचे मोठे नवल वाटते. त्यांना मी नेहमी म्हणतो, " एकदा फेरफटका तर मारा भाजीबाजारात! मग तुम्हाला भाज्यांची नवलाईची दुनिया कळेल.
गरगरीत लाल भोपळे, फुगलेली दुधी, लांबसडक पडवळे, तुकतुकीत जांभळ्या रंगाची वांगी, हिरवीगार तोंडली, हिरव्या भोपळी, मिरच्यांप्रमाणे लाल आणि पिवळा पोशाख घातलेल्या भोपळी मिरच्याही हल्ली आपल्या स्वागताला भाज्यांच्या गाळ्यात तयार असतात. पांढऱ्याशुभ्र फ्लावर बरोबर हिरव्या रंगाचा फ्लॉवर ही आजकाल दिसतो. फळांच्या विभागातील ती रंगीबेरंगी तजेलदार मंडळी तर आपले मन नुसत्या दृष्टिक्षेपाने तृप्त करतात.
फळभाज्यांच्या विभागातून बाहेर पडावे, तर पालेभाज्या आपल्या स्वागतासाठी सज्ज! त्यांचा तो हिरवा ताजेपणा माणसाला खुणावत असतो. पालेभाज्यांपुढचे लाल गरगरीत टोमॅटो आपले लक्ष वेधून घेतात. हिरव्या मिरच्यांचा वास नाकात शिरला की कसा जिवंतपणा येतो आणि कोथिंबीर - ती तर प्रत्येक पदार्थाची लज्जत वाढवत असते.
मला भाजीविक्रेत्यांबद्दल ही कुतूहल वाटते. केवढा अभिमान असतो त्यांना आपल्या मालाबद्दल! केवढे सजवत असतात ते आपल्या मालाला... आणि हा अभिमान व्यक्त करण्याची रीतही प्रत्येकाची न्यारी! मटार, शेंगा, आंबे यांच्या हंगामाच्या दिवसांत तर विक्रेत्यांच्या आरोळ्यांनी मंडई गजबजलेली असते. आपण ओरडलो नाही तर आपला माल विकला जाणार नाही, असेच जणू त्यांना वाटत असते. ग्राहकांना आकर्षून घेताना काहीजण 'काव्यात्मक पंती' आळवत असतात.
या विक्रेत्यांप्रमाणे ग्राहकांच्याही अनेक तऱ्हा या भाजी बाजारात नजरेस पडतात. काहीजणांना भाज्या उगाचच चाचपून पाहण्याची, वरखाली करण्याची खोड असते. काही जणू दुरूनच भाज्या न्याहाळतात. काहीजण भाजीच्या भावाबद्दल घासाघीस करतात. काही ग्राहक उगाचच विक्रेत्याशी भावाबद्दल वाद घालतात आणि बराच वेळ घालवून किरकोळ खरेदी करतात. आपण फसवले तर जात नाही ना, हाच भाव त्यांच्या चेहर्‍यावर असतो. त्याच वेळी कोपऱ्यात टाकून दिलेल्या भाजीतून स्वतःच्या पोटासाठी भाजीपाला निवडणारी - वेचणारी गरीब मुले - बायका दिसल्या की आपल्यालाही पोटात पिळवटून येते. अशाप्रकारे ही भाजी मंडई समाजजीवनाचे एक छोटे चित्ररूप दर्शनच घडवते.
