केशवसुतांच्या 'आम्ही कोण?' या कवितेतील वरील ओळींतून कलावंतांचा आत्मविश्वास व्यक्त झाला आहे. काहींना ही कलावंतांची दर्पोक्ती वाटते. पण खरोखरी कलावंतांच्या प्रतिभेचा 'परीसस्पर्श' कोणत्याही वस्तूला दिव्य सौंदर्य प्राप्त करून देतो, यात शंका नाही. असे हे कलावंत संपावर गेले तर... किंवा कलावंत नसते तर...
कला पोरकी होईल. माणसाचे जीवन निरस, रूक्ष होईल. सौंदर्य, कोमलता, भव्यता या सर्व चांगल्या गोष्टींना पारखे झाल्यावर माणसाच्या कलाहीन जीवनाला 'जीवन' का म्हणावे, असाच प्रश्न पडेल.
जेव्हा माणूस चंद्रावर पोचला शास्त्रज्ञ सांगू लागले की, चंद्र हा भाजलेल्या पापडा सारखा आहे. त्याच्यावर 'सुधा' कुठली. साधे पाणीही नाही. पण आमच्या कवी कुसुमाग्रजांनी सांगितले, 'छे, छे, शास्त्रज्ञांचा चंद्र वेगळा आहे आणि कलावंतांचा चंद्र वेगळा आहे. कलावंतांचा चंद्र हा सैदव स्वप्नांचा सौदागर आहे.' असे हे कलावंत शून्यातून स्वर्ग निर्माण करणारे आहेत. हे संपावर गेले तर भगवंताने निर्माण केलेल्या या सुंदर जगाचे रौरव नरकात रूपांतर व्हायला कितीसा वेळ लागेल?
कलावंत संपावर गेले, म्हणजे नवनवीन सिनेमा, चित्रपटांची पाहण्याची मौजमजा अनुभवता येणार नाही. जुने नवे कोणतेही नाटक पाहायला मिळणार नाही. इतकेच काय, दूरदर्शनवरच्या सर्व वाहिन्यां बंद पडतील. केवळ बातम्या आणि जाहिराती! क्वचित कुठे एखाद्या शिळ्या कार्यक्रमाची ध्वनिचित्रफीत लावून ठेवली जाईल. म्हणजेच कलावंत संपावर गेले, तर जीवनातील ताजेपणाच हरवून जाईल. कुसुमाग्रजांची कविता असो, डॉ. लागूंचा नाट्याभिनय असो वा अजिंठ्याची लेणी असोत वा एखाद्या नर्तिकेचा पदन्यास असो, रसिक तिचा पुन्हा पुन्हा आस्वाद घेतो आणि प्रतिक्षणी त्याला नवा आनंद अनुभवता येतो. कलावंत संपावर जाताच हे सारे लयाला जाईल.
कलावंत संपावर गेले, तर सर्वात अधिक अवघड स्थिती होईल ती त्या कलावंतांचीच. कारण कलावंताची कला ही त्याच्या उत्कट भावनेचा उद्रेक असतो. आपली कला व्यक्त केल्याशिवाय त्यांना राहवत नाही. कलावंतच आपला अपमान गिळून टाकतील. अपमान करणाऱ्यांना मनात माफ करतील आणि आपला संप मागे घेतील.
