शाळा म्हणजे 'कडक बंधने', शाळा म्हणजे 'विविध प्रकारच्या शिक्षा' अशीच समीकरणे बहुसंख्य विद्यार्थ्यांच्या मनात बसलेली असतात. शाळा नसत्या तर... शाळा बंद झाली तर मुलांच्या वाट्याला मुक्तजीवन येईल. मनाला लागेल तेव्हा खावे, मनाला वाटेल तेव्हा पाणी प्यावे, नाचावे, बागडावे, आरडाओरडा करावा... त्यांना कोणी अडवणार नाही. जीवनाच्या मुक्त शाळेच्या अनुभवाच्या पुस्तकातून त्यांनी हवे ते, हवे तेवढे शिकावे, पण हे शिकणे सर्वांनाच कसे जमावे? कारण 'गुरुविना ज्ञान प्राप्त करणे असंभव आहे' असे थोर माणसे सांगून गेली आहेत.
शाळेतील काही काही गोष्टी मनाला खूप त्रासदायक वाटत असल्या तरी 'रम्य ती शाळा' हेच खरे! शाळेत जीवाभावाचे सोबती जोडले जातात. मित्रांच्या संगतीत नाना मनोराज्ये रंगवली जातात. साहस करण्यासाठी शाळा आणि शाळकरी मित्र आवश्यकच असतात. शाळेतील स्नेहसंमेलने, त्यात रंगवलेली नाटके, शाळेत केलेली इतर धमाल, शाळेतील सहली, श्रमदानांचे कार्यक्रम आणि त्यानंतर श्रमपरिहाराची भोजने, क्रीडास्पर्धा, बक्षीस समारंभ या सार्‍या गोष्टी शाळा बंद पडल्या तर अनुभवायला मिळणार नाहीत.
शाळा म्हटली की चुरशीच्या स्पर्धा आल्या. कबड्डी, खो-खो, क्रिकेट, व्हॉलीबॉल कोणताही सामना असा रंगतो की, सामना संपला तरी पुढे महिनोनमहिने त्याबाबतच्या आठवणींची उजळणी होते. शाळा बंद पडल्या किंवा शाळा नसत्या तर मग असे विविध प्रकारचे चुरशीचे, मनोरंजनात्मक सामने कसे बरे रंगणार?
शाळा ही विद्यार्थ्यांची माता असते. अनेक कडू-गोड आठवणी विद्यार्थ्यांनी आपल्या शालेय जीवनात जमा केलेल्या असतात. शाळेमध्ये शिकत असताना आपल्या प्रत्येकाच्या मनावर फार मोलाचे संस्कार उमटलेले असतात. म्हणून माणूस त्याच्या जीवनामध्ये किती हि मोठा झाला, तरी तो आपल्या शाळेला विसरू शकत नाही. म्हणूनच शाळा नसत्या तर मानवाचे नक्कीच फार मोठे नुकसान झाले असते. त्यापेक्षाही माणूस स्वतःचे माणूसपण गमावून बसला असता.
