आज एकविसाव्या शतकात माणसाला खेळाचे महत्व उमगलेले आहे. शरीर निरोगी राहण्याकरता व्यायाम, योगा व खेळ आवश्यक आहेत हे सर्वमान्य झाले आहे. आज भारतात क्रिकेट हा अत्यंत लोकप्रिय खेळ झाला आहे. त्यामुळे सहाजिकच क्रिकेट खेळणाऱ्यापेक्षा क्रिकेट पाहणारे व ऐकणारे यांचीच संख्या फार मोठी झाली आहे. मी त्यांपैकीच एक. मी क्रिकेट खेळतो, क्रिकेट संबंधित पुस्तके वाचतो आणि मैदानावर जाऊन व न जमल्यास दूरचित्रवाणीवर क्रिकेटचे सामने पाहतो. सामने पाहताना माझे देहभान हरपते.
क्रिकेट हा सांघिक खेळ आहे. यात दोन संघात सामने होतात. प्रत्येक संघात अकरा अधिक तीन खेळाडू असतात. या खेळासाठी चपळता, काटकपणा आणि शिस्तप्रियता आवश्यक असते. तीन स्टम्प्स व त्यांवरील दोन बेल्स मिळून विकेट म्हणजे यष्टी तयार होते. अशा समोरासमोरील दोन विकेट्स असतात. विकेटची रुंदी २२.९ सेंटीमीटर असते. दोन विकेट्स मध्ये २२ यार्ड अंतर असते, यालाच 'पिच' किंवा खेळपट्टी असे म्हणतात. खेळपट्टीची रुंदी पाच फूट असते. मैदान सामान्यता वर्तुळाकृती असते.
क्रिकेट या खेळामध्ये एक संघ फलंदाजी करतो, त्याचवेळी दुसरा संघ गोलंदाजी करत असतो. दिवसा खेळल्या जाणाऱ्या कसोटी क्रिकेटसाठी लाल रंगाचा चेंडू वापरतात तर दिवस-रात्र खेळल्या जाणाऱ्या एक दिवशीय सामन्यासाठी सफेद रंगाचा चेंडू वापरतात. बॅटची लांबी ३४ इंचांपेक्षा व ४ १/२ इंचांपेक्षा अधिक नसावी. बॅटचे वजन मात्र निश्चित नसते.
या खेळात फलंदाजी (बॅटिंग), गोलंदाजी (बॉलींग) व क्षेत्ररक्षण (फिल्डींग) या सर्व बाबतीत आपले नैपुण्य दाखवता येते. या खेळामध्ये चार धावा म्हणजेच चौकार आणि सहा धावा म्हणजेच षटकार मारणाऱ्या, तसेच अवघड झेल पकडणाऱ्या खेळाडूला प्रेक्षक डोक्यावर घेतात. क्षणाक्षणाला चुरस वाढवणारा असा हा खेळ आहे.
सध्या कसोटी सामन्या बरोबर एकदिवसीय सामनेही खेळले जातात. अशा प्रकारचे खेळाचे सामने लोकांना आजकाल खूप आवडतात, कारण त्यांचा निकाल झटपट लागतो. आपल्या देशात अनेक उत्कृष्ट क्रिकेट वीर होऊन गेले व आजही आहेत. त्यांनी जागतिक कीर्ती मिळवली आहे. आज सचिन तेंडूलकर हा सर्वांचा आवडता खेळाडू आहे.
क्रिकेटमध्ये अनेक खेळाडूंनी केलेल्या त्यांच्या वैयक्तिक विक्रमांची माहिती जपून ठेवली जात असली तरी या खेळात सांघिक एकता हीच महत्त्वाची आहे. तीच यश खेचून आणते. काही वेळेला एखाद्या खेळाडूने भरपूर धावा केल्या तरी संघाला यश मिळत नाही. तेव्हा लक्षात येते की, 'क्रिकेट हा संधीचा ( Chance) खेळ आहे.' प्रत्येक खेळाडूला अतिशय जबाबदारीने खेळावे लागते, त्याच्या संघाचा आणि पर्यायाने देशाचा लौकिक अवलंबून असतो.
