शालान्त पूर्वपरीक्षेचा निकाल जाहीर झाल्यावर लगेच दुसऱ्या दिवशी आमच्या शाळेने निरोप समारंभ आयोजित केला होता. समारंभासाठी सायंकाळी बरोबर पाच वाजता मी शाळेत गेलो. शाळा आज मला वेगळीच भासत होती. प्रवेशद्वारा पुढे शोभिवंत रांगोळी रेखाटली होती आणि सारे शिक्षक आम्हा विद्यार्थ्यांच्या स्वागतासाठी उभे होते. या स्वागताने आम्ही सारे विद्यार्थी भारावून गेलो. सभागृह आज नव्या नवलाईने नटलेले दिसत होते. आजवर ज्यांनी शाळेस उत्कृष्ट यश मिळवून दिले, अशा गुणवंत विद्यार्थ्यांची छायाचित्रे सभोवताली स्टँडवर लावून ठेवलेली होती. केवढी कल्पकता होती त्यात! या साऱ्या प्रतिमा आम्हाला जणू प्रेरणा देत होत्या, तुम्हालाही अशाच प्रकारचे यश मिळवायचे आहे, शाळेचा लौकिक वाढवायचा आहे, असेच जणू त्या आम्हाला सुचवत होत्या. जागोजागी निशिगंधाच्या व गुलाबांच्या फुलांची आरास केल्यामुळे वातावरण सुगंधित झाले होते.
ठरल्या वेळी कार्यक्रमाला सुरुवात झाली. आमचे जिल्हयाचे जिल्हाधिकारी समारंभाचे प्रमुख पाहुणे होते. मुख्याध्यापकांनी पाहुण्यांचा परिचय करून दिला. तेव्हा एक सुखद धक्का बसला. कारण जिल्हाधिकारी आमच्याच शाळेचे माजी विद्यार्थी होते व त्यांचे नाव शाळेच्या सन्माननीय विद्यार्थ्यांच्या यादीत झळकत होते.
निरोप समारंभाचे एक खास वैशिष्ट्य म्हणजे या समारंभात भाषणांची आतषबाजी नव्हती. आमच्या बॅचने गेल्या दहा वर्षात मिळवलेल्या यशाचा आढावा मुख्याध्यापकांनी मोजक्या शब्दांत घेतला. पाहुण्यांनी अगदी मोजक्याच शब्दात आपल्या जीवनातील यशाचे सर्व श्रेय शाळेकडे कसे जाते, हे विनम्रपणे सांगितले. विद्यार्थी आणि शिक्षक यांच्याकडून एक मताने निवड झालेल्या आदर्श विद्यार्थ्याचा पाहुण्यांच्या शुभ हस्ते सत्कार करण्यात आला. त्यानंतर विद्यार्थ्यांना भाषण करण्यास पाचारण करण्यात आले. पण नेहमी सभा गाजवणारे सारे वाचावीर मात्र 'अवाक' झाले होते. भारावलेल्या कंठातून शब्द फुटत नव्हते. सारेच वातावरण गंभीर झाले होते. सगळ्यांच्यात डोळ्यांच्या कडा ओलावल्या होत्या. हा वातावरणातील उदास गंभीरपणा निवळावा, म्हणून काही गमतीदार खेळ सुरू करण्यात आले व नंतर अल्पोपहाराचा कार्यक्रमाने समारंभाची सांगता झाली.
समारंभ संपला तरी आमचे पाय शाळेतून निघत नव्हते. या वास्तूशी आमच्या शालेय जीवनातील अनेक स्मृती निगडित झालेल्या होत्या. त्या स्मृतींना उजाळा देत गुरुजनांचा आणि मित्रांचा निरोप घेऊन मी शाळे बाहेर पाऊल टाकले. क्षणैक मागे वळून पाहिले. डोळ्यांमधून ओघळणाऱ्या अश्रूंमुळे शाळेचा सारा परिसर अंधुक दिसत होता. शालेय जीवनातील ते 'सुंदर दिन हरपले!' या विचाराने ऊर दाटून आला होता.

Our school held a farewell ceremony the very next day after the results of the pre-school exams were announced. I went to school at exactly five o'clock in the evening for the ceremony. School seemed different to me today. A beautiful rangoli was drawn in front of the entrance and all the teachers stood to greet us students. We, the students, were overwhelmed by this welcome. The hall seemed to be in a new state today. To this day, photographs of meritorious students who have made the school a great success were displayed on the stands all around. What ingenuity there was! It was as if all these images were inspiring us, as if you wanted to achieve the same kind of success, to increase the school's reputation. The atmosphere was fragrant with the arrangement of tuberose and rose flowers in various places.
The program started at the appointed time. Our district collector was the chief guest at the ceremony. The headmaster introduced the guests. Then came a pleasant shock. Because the Collector was an alumnus of our school and his name was on the list of honorable students of the school.
A special feature of the farewell ceremony was that there were no fireworks of speeches at the ceremony. The headmaster reviewed the success of our batch over the last ten years in a few words. The guests politely explained in a few words how all the credit for their success in life goes to the school. The ideal student, who was unanimously selected by the students and teachers, was felicitated by the guests. Students were then invited to speak. But all the readers who were always holding meetings were 'surprised'. Words were not bursting from the heavy throat. The whole atmosphere was tense. The corners of everyone's eyes were wet. The sadness of the atmosphere was relieved, so some fun games were started and then the ceremony ended with a snack.
Even after the ceremony, our feet did not leave the school. Many memories of our school life were associated with this building. I stepped out of the school, saying goodbye to my teachers and friends. Looking back for a moment. Tears welled up in his eyes, and the whole school was in a state of disarray. Those 'beautiful days are lost in school life!' The thought made my chest ache.
