१९९९ मध्ये इंग्लंड मध्ये विश्वचषक क्रिकेट स्पर्धेतील सामने चालले होते. या स्पर्धेत दक्षिण आफ्रिका व ऑस्ट्रेलिया या संघात उपांत्य सामना होणार होता. हा मी पाहिलेला अत्यंत चुरशीचा सामना होता.
सामन्याचा दिवस उजाडला. मी खाद्य-पेय घेऊन स्टेडियमवर गेलो. ठीक वेळेवर दोन पंच आणि दोन्ही संघाचे कप्तान मैदानावर आले. नाणेफेक झाली. त्यात दक्षिण आफ्रिकेच्या संघ प्रमुखाने- हॅन्सी क्रॉनिएने नाणेफेक जिंकून बाजी मारली. मैदानाचा रागरंग पाहून त्याने प्रथम गोलंदाजी स्वीकारली.
थोड्याच वेळात ऑस्ट्रेलियाचे सलामीवीर एडम गिलख्रिस्ट आणि मार्क वॉ फलंदाजीसाठी मैदानावर उतरले, तर दक्षिण आफ्रिकेचा संघ क्षेत्र रक्षणासाठी मैदानात आला. कप्तानाने चेंडू शॉन पोलॉक याच्या हातात दिला. आता साऱ्या प्रेक्षकांनी आपले श्वास रोखून धरले होते. सर्व जगामध्ये प्रथम क्रमांकावर असलेल्या ऑस्ट्रेलियाच्या संघाने आपल्या खेळाची सुरुवात मोठ्या सावधपणे केली. खेळ थोडा धीमा वाटत होता. स्टेडियम मधील सर्व चाहता वर्ग धावांच्या आतषबाजी कधी होणार यासाठी आतुर झाला होता, पण फलंदाज फारच जबाबदारीने खेळत होते.
नियोजित पन्नास षटकांमध्ये ऑस्ट्रेलियाने आपल्या नावावर २१३ धावा झळकल्या. चाळीस मिनिटांची विश्रांती सुरू झाली. क्रीडांगणावर खेळाडू नव्हते, प्रेक्षक जरा सैलावले होते. बरोबर आणलेल्या खाद्य वस्तूंचा समाचार घेणे सुरू झाले. पण कोठेही कागद फेकाफेकी, हुल्लडबाजी नव्हती. विश्रांतीचा काळ संपला, पण कोठेही अस्वच्छतेचा अंशही नव्हता.
थोड्याच वेळात दक्षिण आफ्रिकेचे सलामीवीर मैदानावर फलंदाजीसाठी उतरले. ऑस्ट्रेलियाचा संघही क्षेत्र रक्षणासाठी मैदानावर आला. दक्षिण आफ्रिकेला सामना जिंकण्यासाठी २१४ धावा करायच्या होत्या. सुरुवात चांगली झाली. धावफलकावर दक्षिण आफ्रिकेच्या नावावर बिनबाद ४६ धावा लागल्या. जॉन्टी ऱ्होडस् व लान्स क्लुसनर यांनी वेगाने फलंदाजी केली. धावफलकावर सात गडी बाद २०० धावा लागल्या होत्या. आता फक्त १४ धावा करायच्या होत्या. अनेकांच्या मनात हाच विचार आला की आता हेच दोन्ही खेळाडू सामना जिंकून देतील, असे वाटत असतानाच जॉन्टी बाद झाला. सारे प्रेक्षक हळहळले. जमलेली जोडी फुटली होती. नंतर आलेला शॉन पोलॉक शून्यावर बाद झाला. आता चुटपुट लागली, दक्षिण आफ्रिका सामना गमावणार की काय? पण अखेरच्या षटकात क्लुसनरने तीन चौकार मारले. आता फक्त दोनच धावा हव्या होत्या. पण शेवटचा फक्त एकच गडी बाकी होता. कशीबशी एक धाव मिळाली. आता एक धाव काढली कि विजय दक्षिण आफ्रिकेचा होणार होता. सारे प्रेक्षक निस्तब्ध होते आणि दुर्दैव म्हणजे, डोनॉल्ड धावचीत झाला. दोन्ही संघाची धावसंख्या सारखीच झाली, २१३! मॅच 'टाय' झाली होती.
मग विजय कोणाचा? सारे वातावरण संभ्रमित होते. पंच निर्णय काय देणार? सर्व अधिकाऱ्यांच्या विचारविनिमयानंतर निर्णय जाहीर झाला. साखळी सामन्यात पहिल्या फेरीत ऑस्ट्रेलियाने दक्षिण आफ्रिकेवर मात केलेली असल्यामुळे 'ऑस्ट्रेलिया' चा संघ विजय ठरला. दक्षिण आफ्रिकेचा संघ या आश्चर्यकारक, महत्त्वपूर्ण सामन्यात पराभूत झाला होता. 'क्रिकेट ए गेम ऑफ चान्स' म्हणतात ते यासाठीच! आजवर मी अनेक सामने पाहिले, पण अखेरच्या क्षणापर्यंत उत्सुकता टिकून धरणारा असा रंगतदार सामना मी यापूर्वी कधीच पाहिला नव्हता.

The 1999 Cricket World Cup was played in England. The semi-final between South Africa and Australia was to be played in this tournament. It was the worst match I've ever seen.
The day of the match dawned. I went to the stadium with food and drink. Just in time, two umpires and the captains of both teams came on the field. The coin was tossed. South Africa's captain Hansie Cronje won the toss and elected to bat. Seeing the rage of the field, he accepted the first bowling.
Shortly after, Australian openers Adam Gilchrist and Mark Waugh came on to bat, while South Africa came on to defend the field. The captain gave the ball to Shaun Pollock. Now all the spectators were holding their breath. Australia, the world's number one team, started the game with great caution. The game seemed a bit slow. All the fans in the stadium were anxious about when the fireworks would be, but the batsmen were playing very responsibly.
Australia scored 213 runs in the allotted 50 overs. The forty-minute rest began. There were no players on the field, the spectators were a bit overwhelmed. News of the food items brought along began. But nowhere was there paper throwing, rioting. The rest period was over, but nowhere was there a trace of uncleanliness.

I have watched many matches to date, but I have never seen such a colorful match that keeps the curiosity alive till the last moment.
